Nutella Rice Krispie Treats

nutella-krispies-1

Aside from my family, there are two things in this world that I honestly don’t think I could live without. At the very least, my quality of life would surely suffer without them. They are Nutella and Rice Krispie treats. Seriously. I have to keep the Nutella jar safely hidden away in my pantry where I can’t see it, or else it would quickly disappear, spoonful by spoonful. And, don’t even get me started on the Rice Krispie treats! I always say that I make them for the kids, but the sad truth is I make them for ME, ME, ME! In fact, I rarely dare to even make them anymore, because if there’s a tray of them in the house, I cannot rest until I have consumed Every. Single. One. If there was a twelve step program for Rice Krispie treats, I’d be in it. Sigh…

nutella-krispies-3

So, imagine the allure of a Rice Krispie treat made with mounds of Nutella swirled in. It’s almost too much to contemplate! I can’t believe I never thought of it before! I actually didn’t think of it this time. I got the idea from an episode of Top Chef Just Desserts, which is pretty much the only thing I’ve gotten from that show so far, except a throbbing headache from watching all of the drama. (Seth, I’m talking about you!)

Now, I’m pretty sure that most of you already know how to make Rice Krispie treats. But I’m going to explain it anyway, because I need some words to go along with all of these pictures. read more >>

FFwD: Gougeres

Friday, October 1, 201026 Comments

Oh, Happy Day! Dorie’s new cookbook has finally arrived! I picked up my copy of Around My French Table last week and was in love before I got past the dust cover. The book is filled with over three hundred of Dorie’s favorite recipes, culled from her time spent …

Los Frijoles Refritos de SGCC (Refried Beans)

Thursday, September 30, 20109 Comments

For years and years, I thought that refried beans were just an ubiquitous substance that automatically made its way onto the plates in most Mexican restaurants. They always had the same mushy, pureed texture, with a few small lumps here and there. They also almost always tasted the same, …

Enchiladas Suizas with Quick Avocado Salsa

Tuesday, September 28, 201020 Comments

Mr. SGCC is not exactly what you would call a gastronome. Don’t get me wrong. He loves to eat and appreciates good food. But, local and sustainable are words he doesn’t normally associate with with that food. He doesn’t care if his chicken is free range or if his …

Spaghetti Squash Gratin

Thursday, September 23, 201020 Comments

There’s one thing about Mr. SGCC that drives me absolutely nuts. (Well, there’s actually more than one thing, but that’s a story for another day.) He suffers in silence. That is to say that, when he doesn’t like something, he usually just sucks it up and doesn’t say anything. …

Roasted Rainbow Carrots with Maple-Mustard Glaze

Monday, September 20, 201025 Comments

I was blessed with another batch of beautiful rainbow carrots in my basket from Suncoast Organics this week. You may recall that the last time I had some, I pickled them with some daikon radish and made a lovely Do Chua. This time, I wanted to show the carrots …

Vote for Team USA in the Mushroom Masters: Shiitake Showdown

Wednesday, September 15, 201010 Comments

Did you know that September is National Mushroom Month? Neither did I until I became part of the Mushroom Masters: A Tournament of Taste, sponsored by the USA’s Mushroom Council, Mushrooms Canada and the Australian Mushroom Growers Association. These three organizations have partnered up with Tastespotting to …

The Lonesome Traveler Hits Seattle Again for IFBC 2010

Friday, September 10, 201077 Comments

Okay, I know this post is woefully late in coming, but that’s part of the rub about travelling. Once you get back home, you’re bombarded by real life again. And for me, that means family obligations, work backlogs and writing deadlines. Unfortunately, the paying gigs take precedence, so SGCC …

La Tavola della mia Famiglia: Pasta con Broccoli

Sunday, August 22, 201027 Comments

Pasta con Broccoli, or Pasta with Broccoli has been a staple meal in my family for as long as I can remember. My grandmother made it. My aunts all make it. My mother makes it, and I do too. It’s not only because it is an incredibly quick …

Boiled Kale with Fried Eggs and Toast

Thursday, August 19, 201014 Comments

Boiled Kale with a Fried Egg and Toast is the simplest of simple dishes, yet it is so incredibly delicious. It’s just kale, simmered in chicken stock with onions, and served on toast with a luscious, gooey, runny fried egg on top. If you’re feeling really daring like I was, you can also fry up some bacon to toss in the mix. No fancy bells and whistles here. Yet, once I began thinking about this guileless little dish, I couldn’t stop!
