Aside from my family, there are two things in this world that I honestly don’t think I could live without. At the very least, my quality of life would surely suffer without them. They are Nutella and Rice Krispie treats. Seriously. I have to keep the Nutella jar safely hidden away in my pantry where I can’t see it, or else it would quickly disappear, spoonful by spoonful. And, don’t even get me started on the Rice Krispie treats! I always say that I make them for the kids, but the sad truth is I make them for ME, ME, ME! In fact, I rarely dare to even make them anymore, because if there’s a tray of them in the house, I cannot rest until I have consumed Every. Single. One. If there was a twelve step program for Rice Krispie treats, I’d be in it. Sigh…
So, imagine the allure of a Rice Krispie treat made with mounds of Nutella swirled in. It’s almost too much to contemplate! I can’t believe I never thought of it before! I actually didn’t think of it this time. I got the idea from an episode of Top Chef Just Desserts, which is pretty much the only thing I’ve gotten from that show so far, except a throbbing headache from watching all of the drama. (Seth, I’m talking about you!)
Now, I’m pretty sure that most of you already know how to make Rice Krispie treats. But I’m going to explain it anyway, because I need some words to go along with all of these pictures.
The first thing you need to do is melt some butter in a big pot. Try to use a nonstick pot if you can. You’ll thank me later.
When the butter is melted, add a bunch of marshmallows and melt them too. I prefer mini marshmallows for this. I think they melt faster. When I make Rice Krispie treats, I don’t want to wait any longer than I have to.
After your marshmallows are all melted, take the pot off of the stove and add in the Nutella. Make sure that you get it all mixed together really well.
Next, add the Rice Krispies…
…And stir, stir, stir. You will definitely need to use a little elbow grease for this.
Be still my heart!
Press the mixture into a shallow pan and let it cool.
When it has cooled, cut it into squares and just try to keep your hands off them. They are sticky, gooey, creamy chewy perfection! I guarantee you won’t be able to eat just one. If you can eat just one, let me know. I want to know your secret.
Nutella Rice Krispie Treats
Ingredients:
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
1 package (10 oz.) regular marshmallows or 4 cups miniature marshmallows
1 cup Nutella
6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
Directions:
Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat and stir in Nutella until melted.
Add cereal. Stir with a wooden spoon or spatula until well coated. It helps to spray a little nonstick cooking spray on the spoon to keep it from sticking.
Using a sheet of wax paper, evenly press mixture into a 13 x 9-inch pan coated with nonstick cooking spray. Cool and cut into 2-inch squares.
Enjoy!

Seriously Seth! Dial back the tears buddy…!!!
We LOVE this idea! We don’t even try and hide the Nutella…it’s futile…we know it’s there…we must have it. We need to stop buying it! But first we need to buy some more to make these…

I am baffled by the amount of drama that exists on Top Chef: Desserts. It’s crazy!
Well, at least these glorious treats came out of it. I can’t keep nutella around at all…but maybe if I have an EXCUSE to do something with it besides go at it with a spoon…maybe then it will be allowed…

Darn you, I forgot I had Nutella in the cupboard until you just reminded me. I have to go smear some on some white bread. Next time I make rice crispy treats, you can be sure there will be some Nutella swirled in!
See ya at Blogher! Hopefully well both be on time for breakfast this year! 😉

I made these exactly as the recipe was written and was very disappointed. As soon as the nutella was added, the marshmallow mixture siezed right up. I could barely get 3 cups of the rice krispies mixed in. I would not make this again.

As if Rice Krispy Treats were not enough danger to my waistline, especially the way Martha Stewart makes them with other sweetened cereals like Captain Crunch and Fruit Loops. We have made them with peanut butter cereals, as well as with seasonal things like Candy Corn for Halloween treats. But now you go and suggest something as absolutely yummy nutella in them and there is no way I can resist making them! That is just going to be to good to pass…waist line enlarging be damned.

Just made them and….. the marshmallow mixture did firm up rather quickly but I sort of mixed the krispies in with quick action and pressed into the pan. Yummy! (Maybe warmer Nutella would make it easier to mix in?)

I did notice that the bars are pretty chewy… but the flavor reminds me a tootsie roll… which makes the chewyness ok! A fantastic idea and I am sad that I’ve missed 30+ years of making them!

Another yummy rice krispie option, add peanut butter. Usually add about 1/3-1/2 cup just as the marshmallows are finishing up melting and before adding the rice krispies. I always have rave reviews.

Great idea…love, love, love both of these things. Can’t wait to try it. I first had Nutella (served at breakfast everyday) when I went to Germany and was thrilled to find it when I got home. One of my favorite things to do is toast a bagel, put cream cheese on it and then a layer of Nutella…YUMMY!

Thanks for sharing this delicious recipe! I’ve been making original rice krispies treats for a long time now and wished that someone would have told me earlier to use a nonstick pot, melt mini marshmallows, and use wax paper. Learned it the hard way. I enjoyed your detailed descriptions and photos. This recipe is a big hit!
