snowflake-cake-2

It’s always hard for me to switch gears after the Holidays.  Just when I really start to get in the groove – they’re over.  I hate taking down all of the festive decorations and packing them away.  And, boxing up the tree ornaments is even worse.  I hate doing that more than I hate ironing.  But time marches on, and so must we all.   So, I tuck away the memories of each Christmas past in wads of tissue paper,  and reassure myself that in about 325 days, I get to do it all over again.

There were many things that I wanted to share with you these past few weeks, but I was too busy “living in the moment” and never quite found the time.  Take this Red Velvet Snowflake Cake, for example.  I served this lovely cake on Christmas Day and it was a showstopper.  It took me more than two days to make, and I barely had time to slide it onto a pretty cake stand before my hungry Holiday revelers were chasing me around the dining room with forks in hand!  I propped it on a coffee table in front of the Christmas tree to hurriedly snap a few pictures while Mr. SGCC ran interference for me.  Honestly, this was probably the most beautiful cake I’ve ever made.  I wish I’d been able to snag a few more glamour shots before it was reduced to crumbs.

I got the inspiration for this cake from the December issue of Southern Living magazine.  There it was on the cover, in all its pristine glory – and I was instantly smitten.  I knew then that I would have to recreate it for our Christmas celebration.   The original was a white cake slathered in vanilla buttercream.  The outside of the cake was garnished with a mass of “snowflakes” carved out of white fondant.

Of course, I couldn’t leave well enough alone.  As gorgeous as that cake already was, I had to put my own spin on it.   In honor of Christmas, I decided to make a moist and fluffy red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting.   I knew that the deep, ruby-colored cake paired with pillowy, white clouds of cream cheese frosting would make a striking contrast when cut.  And, did it ever! read more >>

Key Lime Cheesecake Minis with Macadamia Graham Cracker Crusts

Thursday, August 30, 20127 Comments

Mr. SGCC is a caveman.  He loves meat.  And, he doesn’t care for sweets.  I know!  Crazy, right?   There are a few exceptions to this, though.  He does enjoy a good cheesecake now and then.  He’s also been known to sneak bites of Key lime pie right out of …

BLACK FOREST CAKE RECIPE

Tuesday, January 17, 20126 Comments

On New Year’s Eve we celebrated Mini SGCC’s 18th birthday.  That’s right.  My baby is now legally an adult.

Of course, that means nothing to me. In my mind, she will always be my little curly-haired cherub.

One would think that Mr. SGCC and I can now …

New York Crumb Cake Recipe

Wednesday, November 9, 201138 Comments

My father wasn’t much of a dessert kind of guy, but there were certain sweets that he really enjoyed, like Carvel ice cream cones, sfogiatelle, and crumb cake.  Not any old kind of crumb cake, mind you. It had to be New York crumb cake – the kind with …

Pumpkin Whoopie Pies with Caramel Cream Cheese Filling Recipe

Thursday, October 27, 201112 Comments

While cupcakes will always hold a special place in my heart, the newest trend in sweet treats these days is whoopee pies.  Yessiree folks, whoopie pies are hot, hot, hot!  And, it’s no surprise either.  What’s not to love about a creamy, cloud-like filling sandwiched between two moist and …

Peachy Keen Buttermilk Cake Recipe

Sunday, July 10, 201122 Comments

When I was a little girl, my mother had two sets of dishes: the “everyday” dishes” and the “good” ones.  The everyday dishes were, of course, the ones we used for meals every day.  The “good” set only came out for holidays and special occasions. She had a set …

FATHERS DAY RECIPES FOR YOUR CAVEMAN

Friday, June 17, 20116 Comments

I’ve referred to Mr. SGCC as a caveman many times over the years, mostly tongue-in-cheek – mostly.   While he is usually a pretty good sport about eating anything I put in front of him, what he really craves is meat – and lots of it.  Big, manly man-sized portions!   …

Zucchini Olive Oil Cake with Crunchy Lemon Glaze Recipe

Sunday, June 12, 201126 Comments

It seems like we have zucchini coming out of the woodwork these days!  Everyone has it growing like mad in their gardens and no one can use it up fast enough.  I happen to adore zucchini, but even I’ve been feeling a bit challenged trying to find some different …

Reel Em in with Blueberry Boy Bait

I was doing a little “housekeeping” in my photo library recently, and I came across a few shots of this amazing little cake that were taken almost a year ago.  I didn’t remember ever sharing it with you before, and after doing some checking, I realized that I never …

La Tavola della mia Famiglia: Italian Ricotta Cheesecake Recipe

Sunday, February 20, 201133 Comments

I’ll let you in on a little secret.  Even though I grew up in an Italian family where more than half of my relatives, including my father and grandparents, were actually from Italy, I had never heard of mascarpone until I was an adult and discovered it for myself.  …
