Daring Bakers Make Tiramisu

tiramisu-11

When I first learned that this month’s Daring Bakers challenge was Tiramisu, I thought “Woo Hoo!”.  At last, an easy one!  I’m Italian.  I can make tiramisu in my sleep!   Then I read something about making our own savoiardi, which are the “lady fingers” that act as the base of the dish.  WHA….? And then, there was something about making a zabaglione, a Marsala wine based type of custard, as well as a pastry cream.  HUH? This didn’t sound like any kind of tiramisu that I’d ever seen, eaten or even heard of.  And, I’ve been intimately acquainted with tiramisu for most of my life.  But, I am a good sport, so I went along.  However, when I got to the part about making our own homemade mascarpone cheese, I began to sweat (and it was 45 degrees here). Make our own mascarpone?!?!  WTF? But, I did it. And, though it took a reallllly long time, it wasn’t hard.  And, even though it wasn’t like any tiramisu I ever knew, it still tasted pretty darn good.

The February 2010 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Aparna of My Diverse Kitchen and Deeba of Passionate About Baking. They chose Tiramisu as the challenge for the month. Their challenge recipe is based on recipes from The Washington Post, Cordon Bleu at Home and Baking Obsession. read more >>

I can’t imagine that there is anyone left in this world that hasn’t heard of the devastating recent events in Haiti.  On January 12, the small Caribbean county was hit by a catastrophic 7.0 earthquake.  By January 24, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been …

Those of you who read my post last week about Momofuku’s Ginger Scallion Noodles have probably already figured out that I did succumb and buy the book.  And, I’m so glad I did!  Even if I never make one more recipe from it, it was still worth the …

Easy Sausage and Peppers Calzones

Sunday, January 24, 2010 37 Comments

I don’t usually cook on Fridays nights.  After a long week of working, cleaning, cooking, blogging, mothering, wife-ing, daughtering and a lot of general running around, I’m pooped!  Sometimes we’ll get take-out. And, sometimes we’ll just go out.  Last Friday night, though, the weather sucked.  It was rainy, …

SGCC Rewind: Meatloaf Involtini

Monday, January 18, 2010 24 Comments

One of the very first recipes I ever posted here at SGCC was for this Meatloaf Involtini.  I created the recipe over two years ago for National Meatloaf Appreciation Day, sponsored by Serious Eats.  Since then, I’ve tweaked and poked the recipe here and there to make it …

Seafood Pasta alla Buzara

Friday, January 15, 2010 32 Comments

The other day I was shopping at my neighborhood supermarket, looking for a little dinner inspiration.  I meandered past the seafood department without a thought.  Usually, I don’t even bother to look in that direction.  I live in Florida, less than a mile from the Gulf of Mexico.  The …

Pate de Fruits and a New Motivation

Sunday, January 10, 2010 43 Comments

What is it about ringing in a new year that makes everything seem so fresh, possible and…well, new?  I mean, it’s not like the world just magically changed in the span of 24 short hours, at least not my world. All of the problems and issues in my …
