Cupcakes vs. muffins:   How are they different?  How are they the same?  Many before me have attempted to answer – and still, the debate goes on.  Some have approached this issue from a scientific standpoint, pointing out the differences in the ratios of ingredients and preparation  methods.   Others  have taken a more practical view focusing on looks, taste and texture.  The most clever observation I’ve seen  is that  “If you threw a cupcake against the wall, you would hear something of a ‘poof!’ If you threw a muffin, you would hear a ‘thud!’”  As for me, they’re both cake.  That one is usually smothered in frosting and the other isn’t is of little consequence.  Neither is the fact that one is considered an acceptable breakfast food, and the other is deemed dessert.  To me, cake is cake.  Sometimes, I eat cupcakes for breakfast and muffins for dessert.  That’s how I roll.

One interesting phenomena, however, deals with size.  While the most prized cupcakes are almost always small, dainty and artfully decorated, muffins aren’t judged by the same standards.  They can get away with being big, clunky and craggy.  Oh, yes.  In the world of muffins, bigger is better.  (After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day!)    Just walk into your favorite bakery, deli or coffee shop and see for yourself.  The scones, pastries and doughnuts are usually all normal sized, but the muffins are huge!

I found the original recipe for these crumb-topped blueberry muffins on Allrecipes.  They were touted as being “extra-generously-sized deli style muffins”.   Of course, any muffin can be big is it’s baked in an oversized muffin cup.  But, the name given to these muffins – “To Die For Blueberry Muffins” – kind of drew me in.   I mean, those are some serious muffin words!   So, I had to try them.  read more >>

Let’s face it, people.  Some foods, no matter how much we love them, are just plain ugly.  A fantastic recipe does not always equal an attractive dish     It’s an issue that we food bloggers struggle with on a regular basis.   We want our food photos to leap off the …

Choco-Rum Buttermilk Banana Bread

Monday, January 7, 20138 Comments

I’m not much of a banana bread girl.  Banana cake, on the other hand, is a whole different story.  Banana bread is breakfast, while banana cake is dessert.  I’d much rather have dessert than breakfast, unless of course, I’m having dessert for breakfast.  And while this Choco-Rum Buttermilk Banana …

As I write this post, I’m hanging my head in shame.  You see, dear readers, I’ve been holding out on you.  Not intentionally, mind you, but holding out just the same.  The other day, as I was sifting through recipes to include in my Easter brunch roundup, I re-read …

Friday Night Frittatas

Although he grew most of the vegetables we ate, my father wasn’t really much into cooking.   He was in charge of salads and made eggs on Sundays, but that was pretty much the extent of it.  Dad did, however, have a few signature dishes that he  loved to prepare …

New York Crumb Cake Recipe

My father wasn’t much of a dessert kind of guy, but there were certain sweets that he really enjoyed, like Carvel ice cream cones, sfogiatelle, and crumb cake.  Not any old kind of crumb cake, mind you. It had to be New York crumb cake – the kind with …

Sweet and Spicy Tomato Jam

Monday, October 17, 201110 Comments

When I was a kid, the word “jam” meant Welch’s Grape Jelly.  That was what my mother kept in our house, and it’s the only kind of fruit spread that I remember ever eating.  It came in Flintstones jars, and each jar featured a different Flintstones  character.  After the …

My family is not very big on breakfast.  We love breakfast foods.  We just don’t like getting up in the morning any earlier than we have to.  Yeah, I know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, blah, blah, blah.  And, we usually do eat some …
